It takes courage to write the story that might ruffle feathers, but those are the stories that come to life, that burn in the hearts of readers for a long time after they finish the book. What will readers think? What will my editor think? What will my agent think? It can be so tempting to try to write to the people who will be reading it, and to try to give them what they want, but when I do that… the creativity stops, the story becomes careful and wooden, and the characters become predictable.
Every time I sit down to write a book, and every choice I make in the writing of my book, I am aware that there will be a reaction. Unfortunately, that can evolve into a readiness for doom that shadows everything we do, and keeps us from reaching out for the life and dreams that we crave so badly. Yes, that’s a good plan, and moments like that weave their way into our being until we are trained to always see the possibility of a negative outcome that we must either avoid or prepare for. We stop our children from crossing a busy street because a car might run them down. One of the gifts of being a human is that we can grasp the concept that for every action we take, there is a reaction…or repercussion. I think fear is a dominating force is so many of our lives, and I know, for me, it can seriously hamstring my ability to create, to write, to thrive, and to be brave enough to try new things.
